Why Are Diwali and Dev Deepawali Celebrated?
Why is Diwali celebrated?
Diwali is celebrated to honour Lord Ramachandra’s return to Ayodhya with Mother Sita and Lakshmana after fourteen years of exile. Lord Rama killed Ravana and came back to His Kingdom. The people of Ayodhya received Him back with lamps and decorated their homes and streets with joy. Their joyful welcome became the festival of Diwali, which we continue to celebrate in remembrance of Lord Ramachandra’s return to Ayodhya.
Why is Dev Deepawali celebrated?
According to the Shiva Purana, three demons (collectively known as Tripurasura) became very powerful after receiving a benediction from Lord Brahma and became falsely puffed up. When they started troubling the demigods, Lord Shiva destroyed their cities and killed them. The demigods showered flowers and celebrated His victory over the miscreants.
Since that day, Dev Deepawali has been celebrated to honour Lord Shiva’s victory over Tripurasura. It is believed that all the demigods descend to the banks of the Ganga on this day. This festival is especially connected with Varanasi because this sacred city belongs to Lord Shiva. Devotees light the entire city with diyas to welcome all the demigods and express their devotion.
Conclusion
Thus, Diwali honours Lord Ramachandra’s return to Ayodhya while Deva Deepawali celebrates Lord Shiva’s victory over Tripurasura. Diwali and Dev Deepawali differ in timing, stories, and traditions, but both bring people together to celebrate with great enthusiasm and express their devotion.
