Step-by-Step Janmashtami Puja Vidhi at Home

1. Clean and prepare the Puja Area

Clean the area where the Janmashtami puja will be performed, and you can also sprinkle gangajal or water of any sacred river. Place a clean cloth on the altar and set up the Deity of Sri Krishna as Laddu Gopal. Decorate the altar with flowers, leaves, lights, and other simple decorations.

2. Begin with Sankalpa

Arrange all the necessary items beforehand, such as panchamrit, water, flowers, incense, ghee lamp, sandalwood paste, fruits, sweets, and other offerings. Sit before the altar and take a sankalpa, expressing your intention to observe Janmashtami and worship Sri Krishna with devotion. Take water in your right palm, chant the sankalpa mantra, and complete the vow by releasing water from your hand. Pray to Shri Krishna for His mercy and the future well-being of the family.

3. Perform Abhisheka of Sri Krishna

Perform abhisheka of Laddu Gopal in Nishita puja muhurat as per your location. Bathe Laddu Gopal with panchamrit, which includes milk, ghee, curd, honey, and sugar water. After the abhisheka, bathe the Lord with pure water (gangajal or water of any sacred river) and gently dry the deity with a soft, fresh cloth.

4. Dress and Decorate the Deity

When Laddu Gopal is completely dried, dress Him in new clothes. Decorate Him with ornaments, peacock feathers, mukut, flowers, and apply Him sandalwood paste and other devotional items. Place Tulsi leaves on His lotus feet, as it is very dear to Shri Krishna.

5. Offer Bhoga to Krishna

Prepare sattvic food and offer it to Laddu Gopal along with tulsi leaves and devotion. Offering tulsi to Shri Krishna is a very important part of the offering because without tulsi, He does not accept any offering. To know the reason behind it, read our guide on why tulsi is offered to Krishna.

We can offer simple preparations made of milk, ghee, curd, butter, nuts, along with fruits and sweets to Laddu Gopal. If one has enough resources, then 56 Bhoga can be offered to Laddu Gopal.

6. Perform Midnight Worship

Perform midnight aarti of Laddu Gopal with incense sticks, lamps, flowers, and peacock feathers. Sing songs of glorification of the Lord like Nand ke anada bhayo jai Kanhaiya lal ki and celebrate the appearance of Shri Krishna. Recite mantras like Hare Krishna Mahamantra and Om Namo Bhagawate Vasudevaya for His glorification and our purification.

7. Offer Prayers and Take Prasada

Offer your prayers to Sri Krishna and seek His blessings for devotion and spiritual progress. The prayers should include being enlightened by knowledge and association of the Lord and His devotees. After the offering is completed, distribute and honor the prasada with respect.
