When we hear of friendship, Lord Krishna and Sudama immediately come to mind. This is because, from childhood, we heard their story of friendship from our elders. The story of their friendship teaches us about true friendship and, at the same time, how we can develop that relationship with Shri Krishna. Completely depending on the mercy of the Lord without caring for the bare necessities of life, just like Sudama did.
Krishna and Sudama’s Childhood Friendship
Sudama was the childhood friend of Shri Krishna, who was a saintly, highly qualified, and self-controlled brahmana. Both Krishna and Sudama lived and studied together as simple, humble students in the ashrama of their guru. They spent their days collecting wood, studying, and executing their daily duties in the forest.
Why Did Sudama Go to Meet Krishna in Dwarka?
Sudama lived a life of extreme poverty, and his family was so impoverished that they were constantly hungry and physically weak. His wife requested him to visit Dwarka, where his childhood friend lives. Shri Krishna was not only his childhood friend but also the king of Dwarka and husband of Rukmini, who is as good as Laxmi.
She assured him that Shri Krishna would definitely help them because He is a well-wisher of everyone. Sudama did not have any desire to ask for money or material needs, but he agreed to meet his childhood friend because of his wife’s repeated requests. His heart was filled with joy to get an opportunity to see his beloved friend face to face once again. Eager to bring a gift for Him, he asked his wife for an offering, and she packed a palmful of chipped rice (poha).
Sudama’s Journey to Dwarka
Sudama happily began his journey to Dwarka with an offering of little chipped rice tied in a small cloth. As he was travelling miles after miles, his feet became tired, but his mind was constantly thinking of his dear friend, Shri Krishna. When he finally reached Dwarka city, he passed through three military camps with giant gates. Because he was a saintly person, the guards kindly let him pass right through.
He saw the surroundings full of pretty parks and shiny lakes. Lotus flowers of different colors were blooming in the water, and beautiful swans were swimming happily. There were massive palaces and skyscrapers made of glittering white marble and decorated with jewels that were so tall they touched the clouds.
Among these wonders, he walked towards the sacred residential quarters where 16,000 palaces of Krishna’s queens stood. When he entered the palace of Queen Rukmini, he felt great happiness and peace due to the sweet aroma of burning incense. Lord Krishna was sitting on Rukmini’s bedstead when He saw His childhood friend Sudama from a distance; He immediately ran toward him.
How Did Krishna Welcome Sudama?
Lord Krishna embraced Sudama tightly, just as He used to embrace His elder brother Balarama. He seated Sudama on His own royal bedstead, washed his tired feet, and sprinkled water on His head. The Lord smeared his friend’s body with sandalwood paste, aguru, saffron, and performed arati with glowing lamps. Shri Krishna was so kind to his devotee friend that He personally massaged his legs and fed him delicious fruits and drinks. While the Lord of the universe was showering His mercy on His childhood friend, Queen Rukmini stood and started fanning Sudama with a camara whisk.
Shri Krishna is everyone’s dear friend (Bhagavad Gita 5.29), and when a devotee serves Him in that relation, He reciprocates with him. This story of Shri Krishna and Sudama is the example that proves this fact and encourages us to build a true and eternal relationship with the Lord.
The Gift of Chipped Rice and Krishna’s Grace
Sudama’s wife had lovingly collected four handfuls of chipped rice from their neighbors and tied them with him. Shri Krishna knows everything, and He asked his friend, “What have you brought for Me? Has your wife given you some nice eatables for Me?” Sudama was hesitating to give the gift of little chipped rice to the Lord, who was the King of the universe.
Only pure love can please Lord Krishna, and Sudama’s love for Krishna is more than enough to get the Lord’s attention. Krishna snatched the small bundle of chipped rice from Sudama and said, “You have brought Me nice chipped rice!” He started crying and ate one morsel, declaring that it could satisfy the entire creation.
As soon as the Lord ate the second morsel, Queen Rukmini caught His hand and stopped Him. Because she knew that just one single bite of Sudama’s loving offering was more than enough to bless him with immense happiness both in this life and the next. Although Sudama came to Dwaraka at the request of his wife to seek help from Krishna. But he asked nothing from the Lord, and the next morning he set off for home.
What Happened When Sudama Returned Home?
Sudama was thinking about Lord Krishna all the way back to his village. When he was a distance from his home, he stopped and rubbed his eyes in disbelief. He saw the straw hut was converted into a glittering palace made of precious stones and jewels. The palace was surrounded by beautiful green parks with sparkling lakes full of lotus flowers, singing birds, and friendly people strolling about.
His wife no longer looked tired and was dressed in gorgeous clothing, wearing a beautiful golden necklace and looking like a goddess from heaven. She was very happy to see her husband, and she bowed down to him with deep love. They stepped inside their new home, which was filled with gems and decorated with pearls. Sudama realized that this was the gift given by his dear friend, Shri Krishna. Lord Krishna had transformed the tiny offering of chipped rice into wealth greater than the wealth of the King of heaven.
